A new service to help people with debt problems keep a lid on their spending has been launched by a Bath charity.
The helping hand aims to keep families on the straight and narrow once a formal plan to control their debt has been drawn up.
Women's pumps The Money Management Support service is part of the Information Takeaway project launched by the DHI social exclusion charity in Monmouth Street.
The organisation is expanding its work beyond its initial drugs and homelessness remit to fill a gap left after trained advisers at other charities such as the Citizens' Advice Bureau have sorted out repayment plans for people facing spiralling debts.
Experience has shown that such debt management plans, setting out repayments to utility firms and lenders, often fail, with many families only making around half the payments anticipated.
Tory burch flats A DHI spokeswoman said: "CABs play a vital role in supporting people to put together debt repayment plans, but they are not able to support people to manage plans.
"With the current uncertainty around employment and people's financial concerns, we feel that the Money Management Service could offer really invaluable support to enable people to become debt- free." A support worker will help people to find out what factors have led them into debt, and help them get the best deals on services while putting money aside for emergencies.
The spokeswoman said it would work closely with the CAB and other bodies: "The service will focus on dealing with any immediate crises, signposting clients for more technical specialist advice, then guiding clients to work through their own debt problems, to empower them to manage money more effectively in the future."
One of the project's aims is to reduce the number of people having to return to debt advisers for fresh help, freeing up staff to see new clients.
The Information Takeaway project is part of a broader drive by DHI to help those feeling socially isolated, and will also involve the Clean Slate training agency and groups working with people with hepatitis C and fighting tranquilliser addiction.
