AUCKLAND-BASED franchise Goods 2 U has opened in the south but is giving Invercargill a six-month trial before deciding whether or not to keep its doors open for good.

The New Zealand variety store chain, an alternative to the $2 Shop, imports items directly from Korea, China and Indonesia. The Invercargill store on Esk St is the ninth store to open around the country.

The store space had been unoccupied since the closure of a Replica Omega Watches similar shop, The Surprise Box, in September last year.

If the Invercargill store is successful the company would consider opening another store in Gore.

Invercargill store manager Min Oh, who relocated from Kerikeri to run the store with his partner Marie Oh, planned Choo shoes to monitor the tastes of Invercargill buyers so he could focus on importing and selling products that suited local shoppers.

The franchise had been delighted to find a suitably sized vacant shop on one of the city's busiest foot traffic streets, Mr Oh said.

Many curious customers had been through the doors since it opened earlier this week
